care

As with your prized possessions, concrete does require some maintenance. It is very simple and doesn’t require much time. Our products are sealed with a food safe sealer which is protected by several coats of food safe wax.  The sealer if extremely durable and stain resistant, the following precautions are worst case scenarios stemming from serious abuse of the surface.

The wax layer will diminish with use; the time for this to occur varies with heaviness of use. When it does wear down, a simple buffing with wax will restore the protective layer, shine, and extend the life of the sealer.

For everyday cleaning, mild soap and water are best as more aggressive cleaners will wear down the wax and sealer sooner. If you are worried about bacteria we can work stainless steel into the design near areas prone to bacteria (near the sink or stove elements). With the stainless steel you can use a more aggressive cleaner and not worry about prematurely wearing down the protective layer on the concrete. We also have a product that is similar to an automotive quick detailer; it can be used once a week and helps to prolong the life of the wax as well as restoring shine. It is a simple spray that you spray on and wipe off; this product is also food safe.

You will want to avoid setting hot items directly on concrete surfaces. The heat will melt the wax and sealer, leaving a vulnerable area that will stain easily. We can incorporate built in hot pads or trivet rails near your cooking area to remedy this. Of course you can always go the tried and true route of using your own hot pads.

One other concern is acids from certain fruits. Acidic fruit juices can lead to acid etching in your surface if they are not cleaned up promptly. Even though the surfaces are sealed the acid will eat through the sealer and cause an effect similar to an acid stained floor. This will only happen if the sealed and properly maintained surface is exposed to the acid for longer than a day. If staining occurs from spills that haven’t been cleaned up in a timely manner, the sealer can be removed and re-applied. This is a messy process and isn’t necessary unless the surface has been abused.

In spite of the need for certain precautions, concrete is a durable and low maintenance product that requires no more care than traditional furnishings. So like any of your fine possessions take care of your concrete and you will have a lifetime of enjoyment from it.
